Hair Restoration in Richmond, Virginia
Dr. Hubert uses the most up-to-date technology to restore your hair naturally, with NO LINEAR SCAR! The days of strip harvesting hair follicles from the back of your head are a thing of the past. The Neograft® system uses Follicular Unit Extraction to harvest hair follicles and transfer them to where they are needed. The procedure is performed in the office with local anesthesia and mild oral sedation – no need for the operating room or general anesthesia. This technique is minimally invasive and has a much quicker recovery.
Follicular Unit Extraction
Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is the next generation of hair restoration, and it achieves the most natural results. A specialized machine is used to harvest individual follicular units (which have 1-4 hair shafts each) from the back of the head. These individual units are then transplanted to the area of the scalp where the hair loss has occurred through tiny needle sticks. This works because the hair follicles on the back of your head are genetically different from the hairs on top of your head, which for many people, are programmed to fall out as you get older. The harvest site on the back of your head heals in about a week with no visible scar.
What should I expect from a Neograft® hair transplant?
The procedure is performed in the office and takes about 4-8 hours, depending on how many individual follicular unit grafts are transplanted. It takes about 1-2 weeks for the sites on the top of the head to heal and form little scabs. For those first two weeks, you have to be very careful with your scalp, protect it from water, sun, and wind, and generally take it easy while the new grafts establish themselves. Then all of the hair follicles will go into their dormant phase, and the hair shafts fall out. Over the next 6-12 months, the new hair follicles will grow and fill in the thinning areas where they are placed. The donor site on the back of your head heals quickly, and usually by around 2 weeks, the remaining hair has come in enough to cover the whole area.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
For many people who either don’t qualify or don’t want to undergo follicular unit extraction hair restoration (Neograft®), or for patients who don’t like the side effects related to minoxidil or finasteride, there may be another good (and usually cheaper) option. Platelet rich plasma, or PRP, has shown promising results in some scientific studies. It is minimally invasive and may help improve the density of your hair follicles. It may also slow the ongoing loss of more hair.
What does PRP treatment involve?
A small amount of blood is drawn from your arm and spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet rich portion from the rest. Platelets are microscopic blood cells that contain multiple growth factors and cellular signals. The scalp is numbed with local anesthetic. Then the area of your scalp is first treated with microneedling to help stimulate the skin. Then the PRP is injected beneath the skin of your scalp. The whole process usually takes an hour or less. Most patients will undergo a series of three PRP treatments, spaced out about one month apart. You can expect some mild swelling, even around your eyes, for a day or two. But the side effects otherwise tend to be quite minimal.
