What is a Breast Lift?

The technical name of the procedure is a mastopexy, but most patients refer to it as a breast lift, as the surgical procedure is designed to lift drooping breasts, giving them a more youthful and full appearance. The operation will also remove excess skin, tighten the remaining tissue, and reduce the size of the areola. This is an optimal procedure for patients who have sagging breasts due to aging, childbirth, or weight loss.

Who are the Best Candidates for a Breast Lift?

As a woman ages, her breasts can acquire a sagging or drooping appearance due to the stretching of the skin and ligaments that support them. Additional factors which influence these changes include pregnancy and significant weight changes.

Women who are good candidates for a breast lift are at a stable weight

Candidates are bothered by the sagging of their breast tissue.

Many candidates experience their nipples pointing downwards

The best candidates also have realistic expectations for this procedure.

Candidates should be in good overall physical health and mentally healthy.

*We ask that our candidates do not smoke, as smoking or vaping nicotine is strongly discouraged and may have a disastrous effect on your result.

Breast Lift Techniques

There is a variety of techniques available, depending on the shape of your breasts, overall body proportions, and your goals. In general, the further that tissue needs to be lifted and the higher the nipple needs to be placed, the longer the scars that are necessary to achieve the lift. But the good news is that all of these scars are confined only to the breast itself.

There are three main mastopexy techniques:

  • Donut Mastopexy – This involves the creation of an outer circular incision around the areola and then another inner circle around the new areolar size. The skin in between is removed, and the outer circle is tightened down to the inner circle. It is ideal for those looking for a smaller degree of change.
  • Lollipop Mastopexy – This features the creation of an incision around the areola and then another reaching from the areola down to the breast fold. It is ideal for moderate rejuvenation.
  • Inverted-T (or anchor shape) Mastopexy – This involves making a lollipop incision and then adding a curving horizontal incision across the breast fold. It is best for dealing with extreme sagging.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Lift Surgery?

At the start of a breast lift, anesthesia is administered to the patient. Following this, the incisions are made. Excess skin tissue is trimmed away using a scalpel and electrocautery, and the tissues of the breast are reshaped for a perkier appearance. The areolae may also be resized or repositioned as needed. Finally, the incisions are closed with the help of internal stitches that you won’t even see. Mostly they are dissolvable. However, occasionally Dr. Hubert will also place a single permanent suture on the inside to keep the areola from widening after surgery.

Since a breast lift procedure is designed to improve the shape of your breast, it does not result in a substantial change in your overall size. If this is a concern, Dr. Hubert is happy to discuss either breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery as well.

You will need to follow Dr. Hubert’s post-surgical care directions closely in order to achieve the best and most natural results after healing. This will also minimize the chance of complications.

During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Hubert will be able to answer any questions and give you more information on how quickly you’re recovering.

Can I combine my Breast Lift with other Procedures?

Toggle

You sure can! Many of our patients combine a breast lift with a tummy tuck or liposuction. After childbirth, many patients receive a mommy makeover to regain the youthful bodies that they lost during pregnancy. This is a very popular procedure we perform, and when doing them together, you’re able to save some money.

Will breast lift surgery increase the size of my breasts?

Toggle

If your goal of the surgery is to increase volume and size, we can combine the surgery with breast implants, which will not only lift but increase the size and fullness of the breasts. A breast lift with implants is very popular, as many patients desire the youthful full breasts they had when they were younger.

How long until I can workout following surgery?

Toggle

We know you’ll be anxious to get back into the gym or return to exercise, but it’s best to wait approximately 6 weeks before heavy lifting and strenuous workouts. During that time, you will be able to do light walks to stay in shape while letting your breast lift results settle.

Do I need to get a mammogram before surgery?

Toggle

The safest course of action is to follow the standard recommendations for screening mammography. If you are 40 years or older, or if you are at increased risk for breast cancer, you may need a screening mammogram. Since breast surgery can change the appearance of your mammogram images, it is best to have this study done before surgery as opposed to afterwards.
