What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a common condition affecting men of all ages, although it tends to peak during the teenage years, and then again later in life. It is an excessive development of glandular or fatty tissue (or both) of the male breast and may be a result of your genetic make-up, hormones, certain diseases, drugs, or medications.

Regardless of its cause, many men seek treatment because of feelings of self-consciousness, social discomfort, or pain. Because many factors can lead to this condition, it is important to address these before considering a surgical solution. If this does nothing to resolve the condition, male breast reduction is the ideal option and is extremely effective.

How Is Male Breast Reduction Performed?

To decide on the exact techniques that will be used during a male breast reduction, the composition of the patient’s male breasts must be determined. This is done during a consultation and physical exam.

If the breasts primarily contain excess fatty tissue, liposuction may be the ideal treatment. If the breasts primarily contain excess glandular breast tissue, surgical excision will be the better option. In many cases, both techniques are used.

At the start of the procedure, anesthesia is administered and incisions are created. Surgical options begin with liposuction of the affected area. Liposuction is the removal of excess fat through a small tube called a cannula, using tiny incisions. The fatty tissue of the male breast is sometimes very dense, or fibrous. So ultrasound-assisted liposuction can also help to break up these dense and fibrous areas. Then Medical suction is employed to remove the fatty cells from the body through the standard liposuction tubes.

It is often necessary to combine liposuction with the removal of the excess glandular breast tissue through a surgical excision in order to achieve your best results. If you have extra skin, this also needs to be removed with a scalpel for proper shape. Finally, the incisions are closed with stitches. This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery

Temporary bruising and swelling are common after male breast reduction. Applying ice packs or cold compresses as recommended helps to ameliorate these issues.

Following the procedure, patients wear a fitted post-operative garment (vest). This elastic garment is worn during recovery and helps in several ways. Not only does it control swelling, but it also encourages the skin to conform to the targeted area’s new underlying contours. It is critically important to avoid vigorous activity during the initial recovery period. Do not participate in sports, weight lifting, or heavy exercise until cleared to do so.

Once your healing process is complete, you will be able to see your full results in the form of a contoured and masculine chest. Looking over male breast reduction before and after photos helps set expectations in terms of results.

How Much Does Male Breast Reduction Cost In Richmond?

The cost of male breast reduction in Richmond can vary on a number of factors. When a patient is considering gynecomastia surgery, price is often their first consideration. Because this is typically a cosmetic procedure, male breast reduction cost is not usually covered by health insurance providers. The cost of the procedure is impacted by the details of the case, including the amount of tissue to be removed, and the types of techniques performed, and the length of the surgery.

How long will the results last?

What’s great about this procedure is that the results are permanent. Our patients are able to enjoy their new chest for a lifetime.

What scars will I get?

Toggle

The main determinant of which scars you will end up with is how much skin needs to be removed. If you don’t have any extra skin, but just a small amount of glandular tissue under the areola, then this can usually be removed through a short scar either along the lower border of the areola or through an even shorter scar through the middle of the areola, running right beneath the nipple. If a significant amount of skin exists, then this can usually only be removed with longer incisions. Typically, Dr. Hubert places this longer scar along the inframammary fold, which makes up the lower border of the chest skin. These scars often heal well. Even more rarely, when there is a severe amount of extra skin, the nipple might actually have to be removed completely, then placed back into the correct position as a skin graft. This can cause usually temporary pale discoloration of the nipples, so Dr. Hubert tries to avoid this technique except for the most severe circumstances. But with all the options on the table with Dr. Hubert, you can rest assured that he will help you achieve your best results.
