Woman stretching

Many men and women suffer from stubborn pockets of fat between the elbow and shoulder and want to remove sagging skin. For those patients, Richmond plastic surgeon Dr. Darrin Hubert recommends an arm lift (also known as a Brachioplasty). Dr. Hubert will tailor the surgery to the patient’s needs and desired goals to achieve the outcome they seek.

Our Richmond arm lift patients find that the surgery greatly benefits their lives, by giving them more self-confidence and more comfort. Your surgery will be performed by Dr. Hubert in our Richmond surgery center.

What is an Arm Lift?

The natural aging process in the upper arm may result in sagging tissues which is especially apparent when you partially raise your arms above your head. This appearance is caused by excessive and loose skin, excessive fatty tissue under the skin, or a combination of both skin and fatty tissue. Brachioplasty, or upper arm lift, involves the surgical removal of this excess tissue. The surgery is sometimes combined with liposuction.

Who is the Best Candidate For an Arm Lift?

A person who has had significant weight loss, for example after gastric bypass or other bariatric surgery, may develop unsightly arms with a lot of extra skin. If you experience inadequate elasticity of the skin in the upper arm, resulting in a drooping or sagging appearance, a Brachioplasty might be the best solution for you.

The best candidates for an arm lift are men and women who are in good health

What are the Benefits of an Arm Lift?

Our Richmond arm lift patients find that the surgery can make a big impact on their lives. We’ve included some of the advantages of the surgery that we’ve seen first hand:

The procedure can give more self-confidence

You’ll be able to better fit into tops and the clothes you desire to wear

The surgery can make you feel more comfortable by reducing extra skin

What’s the First Step?

The first step to the procedure is to book a consultation with Dr. Hubert. During your consultation, you’ll be able to express your goals with surgery, ask questions, and listen to Dr. Hubert’s recommendations. If you both agree that surgery is the best solution, we’ll book your appointment and provide you with full pre and post-operative instructions.

Dr. Hubert will have specific questions on your diet, past surgeries, and the medications you’re taking. Remember, be open with Dr. Hubert as the questions are designed to ensure we’re able to reduce risk and complications.

Arm Lift Surgery

Dr. Hubert and the entire surgical staff at Richmond Plastic Surgery pride themselves on patient safety. To remove the unwanted tissue, your expert surgeon, Dr. Hubert will create an incision starting at the elbow and extending to the armpit. He will pull the skin and fat tight across the top of the incisions. Any excess will be trimmed away. A temporary surgical drain may be placed to prevent fluid from building up. Dr. Hubert then closes the skin with dissolvable sutures beneath the skin surface.

The entire surgery typically takes two to three hours to perform.

As with other areas of plastic surgery, you can expect an improved shape at the expense of a scar. The scars are usually either hidden in the armpit or are along the inside of the upper arm. For many people, the scarring improves over time. However, arm lift scars typically take longer to heal than those from other surgery. Additional treatments are sometimes required to improve the appearance of the scars.

Arm Lift Recovery

Upper arm lifts are usually done as outpatient surgery. You may need to wear a special garment with sleeves or arm wraps for the initial post-operative period to keep the swelling down and promote appropriate healing. Dr. Hubert will be able to provide you with exact post-op instructions during your appointment.

Can an arm lift be combined with other procedures?

Many people with extra skin in their upper arms also have extra fatty tissue in the same area. Dr. Hubert often combines liposuction with an arm lift to help you get your optimal result. Massive weight loss patients can have sagging skin on the chest wall too, just below the armpit. Since it is closely related to the upper arms, Dr. Hubert may recommend contouring this area at the same time.
