Patient Age: 65
65 year old man with rhinophyma of the nose. This is an overgrowth of the sebaceous glands in the skin of the nose. Contrary to popular belief, it is not caused by alcohol. However, it can be quite disfiguring. This patient’s treatment consisted of surgical shaving of his nose, while under general anesthesia. This was followed by electrical cautery at the end of the procedure to minimize post-operative bleeding. The open wound on the nose then healed on its own over the next 7 weeks. The photo is shown seven months after the surgery.
